Our senses absorb wonder and beauty as we nourish our soul to overflowing. In this blog, I will share things that nourish my soul. I find wonder in many places in my life; music, books, nature, people, art, travel, food, passion, creativity and much more. In sharing these sources of wonder with others, my hope is to spread the feeling of pure, innocent joy felt in the hearts of those who truly absorb the wonder. Fill your cup, pass it on, then fill another and so on . . .

The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) Part 12

This is one of my favorite excerpts from one of my all-time favorite movies, The Count of Monte Cristo. This movie is an amazing story of true love, deceit, greed, returning from the depths of despair, revenge, lost loves reunited, all filmed in the incredibly beautiful landscape of Malta.

Billie Holiday - The Very Thought of You

I absolutely adore the music of Billie Holiday and how the passion in her voice moves me. This is one of my favorites. I think it is so true what this song says about how someone can become so deeply rooted in your heart and mind that everywhere you turn, you are reminded of them. It is a beautiful sentiment and one I can certainly relate to.

"Hug for the World"

Hugs, laughter, smiles, the power of affection, joy, these are things that we all have in common. No matter what continent you live on, what religion you practice or don't, what race or socioeconomic status, we all experience these emotions from within on a daily basis. It is obvious that even the animal kingdom shares in these emotions. The physical distance between us may be great from one continent to the next but in reality, we are very closely connected to one another if we match soul to soul and heart to heart. Enjoy this video which represents the similarities that permeate across our human race. True Beauty!

Jesse Cook - Closer To Madness

I know that I posted a Jesse Cook song before and I hope you were able to check into his music a little further. Still, I want to share with you today, one of his pieces that I find most amazing. Listen to this song as each instrument sings a unique part of the story through the journey closer to madness.

Wherever You Go, There You Are

Today, I want to share with you one of the books that really changed my perspective in life and helped guide me toward my center. After reading this book, I felt a drastic shift in my emotional stability, inner peace and everyday tranquility. It is a great read for anyone, especially if you are struggling with addiction, loss, depression, emotional instability. We can all learn to truly love who we are at any particular moment in time just through finding our center, our truest self and really being present with ourselves.

One of my favorite songs by Norah Jones. For me, it is about learning to really love yourself, be yourself and soar. Don't let others define you or dictate your personality and goals for you. When I was very young, I was introduced to the amazing music of Ravi Shankar and his sitar. I was instantly taken with the mystical sound of this spectacular instrument. Cape Cod Chamber: Travel, Tourism, Vacations, Accommodations, Restaurants and Tourist Information

Today, I want to talk about one of my favorite places, Cape Cod. I will probably post about this travel destination from time to time because it is a great treasure for me. I have traveled to to the Cape on several occasions and each trip was filled with wonder. Some of my favorite towns to visit are Sandwich, Provincetown and Hyannis.
It is a most serene place to me. The towns are quaint and welcoming, the sand and water surround you and strolling among them puts you in a meditative state. I have stayed at some great little bed and breakfasts there which I will highlight in a separate post at a later date.
Spectacular cuisine was a theme of my trips to the Cape as well. Of course, the seafood is fresh and affordable. I enjoyed some incredibly delicious Brooklyn style pizza while in Provincetown. I had some of the most amazing and memorable quiche at a B&B in Sandwich called Bay Beach. I will definitely tell you more about this B&B in a later post, it is an incredible place!
All throughout the Cape, the people were welcoming and friendly. I felt that the atmosphere was one of peace, calm, freedom and simple joy. I look forward to a day when I can return again to experience the Cape and the tranquility it offers.

Nature as Art

On a beautiful autumn weekend in the autumn of 2010, I was fortunate to share in a relaxing cabin getaway with a wonderful group of girls.  As we pulled up to the cabin that first evening, the sun was just starting to fall below the tree line and the most amazing shadows were cast on the golden and red hues that surrounded us.  The first thing that I noticed next to our cabin, in the line of trees just off the parking area, was this "tree sculpture" as I called it.  It struck me right away because of how the one tree had broken in two and the other tree seemed to reach out to catch it as it fell.  At least, that is how I imagined it had happened.  The tree is being held up by a small branch that it seemed to get caught on after the fall.  I thought this was a pretty spectacular example of nature at work to preserve itself.  It is definitely what I would call, "Nature as Art".  I will hold onto this image as a reminder of how even the smallest branch is strong enough to support another.  We should not underestimate the capabilities of another or judge a book by it's cover.

Autumn

The colors and fragrances of autumn fill me with wonder and delight. Living in Michigan, I have always been grateful for the experiences that come with the changing of the seasons. I love seeing the first blooms on the trees in early Spring. Warm Summer nights, as the season begins to unfold, invite everyone outdoors and into the beauty and comfort that abounds. Autumn, with it's changing colors, cool evenings and the unique fragrances that fill the air, entices us to head out to the apple orchards, cider mills or local parks to soak up those last bits of warmth before the frost. As winter approaches, the Holiday Seasons are already in full swing and outdoor lights create a wondrous atmosphere that really fills us with Holiday cheer. Those first frosts cover the landscape in a coat of white and make me feel as though I am living inside a beautiful masterpiece.
Still, Autumn is my favorite time of year. My senses overflow during this mystical season. I love taking drives to look at the fall colors and photographing the many sights that I see along the way. I love the smells that tantalize as I drive by any of the many apple orchards and cider mills in the area. I enjoy taking long walks and hearing the crunching of the leaves under my feet. Raking leaves is an enjoyable experience for me as it brings to mind some great memories of jumping in the leaves with my Brother as a small child. I love the temperatures as they are just right for a comfy sweatshirt and a cup of hot cocoa. There are so many wonderful things about Autumn. What is your favorite season?

Hot Air Balloons

Hot air balloons have always fascinated me. My dream is to take a ride in one someday. I am impressed by their innovation, beauty and grace. Watching them gives me a peaceful feeling inside. Here are some photos that I took at a balloon festival that I enjoy attending each year out in Howell, Michigan. I have hundreds of photos of hot air balloons because they all have such unique qualities. They are works of art! Each one is an expression of it's owner/pilot and you can see that they take great pride in these awesome vehicles. It must be an unbelievable view from up there.

While on a New England vacation back in the late 90's, we happened upon this adorable little town with miles of shoreline beaches. The town had great seafood at rock bottom prices, great little shops, a piano bar and so much more. The town was quaint and welcoming, attracting people from all over the world. It was relaxing and offered so much to do. I returned there on another trip to Maine and plan to go back again someday. If you are ever in that neck of the woods, I suggest you check it out!!! Great friendships

There is so much wonder that ebbs and flows from great friendships that can truly stand the test of time. I have been very fortunate in my life to maintain some great connections spanning more than 2 decades. In friendships that begin in childhood and last on into the later years of life, there is a remarkable kind of connection that feels like home, offering a sense of unity throughout the passage of time. Having people in my life that have grown with me and always offered that unconditional love has been one of my greatest treasures. Throughout my life, I have viewed my closest friends as family. I think it is extremely important to surround yourself with individuals who bring light, love, understanding, compassion, inspiration, honesty, passion and harmony.

I think I am always grateful for the amazing relationships that I have in my life. Still, from time to time, I see a more vivid picture detailing just how vibrant these relationships are in affecting me from the inside out.

One day, a couple of weeks ago, I was struggling with one of those days where defeat seemed to be chasing my coattails. As the day was coming to a close, I felt drained, hopeless and uninspired. I decided to telephone my best friend who is really like a sister to me and after only ten minutes with her, I was revived!!! Her ability to bring me back to center was incredible and just what I needed at that moment. So, it became even more clear to me what a wonderful relationship I have with her and how important it is to cherish it!

I am grateful and filled with wonder for the amazing experiences that I have been gifted as a result of this friendship and many other relationships that have brought wondrous beauty into my life. We never know how long we have here to absorb the wonder of it all and breathe in the many fragrances that spill into our lives on a daily basis. So, soak it up, make the most of every moment and do not waste any time in anger or frustration or what is out of your control. Because, the only thing that really counts is sharing moments with those that you love and discovering the best in each other, drawing out the positive to create an environment of love with no room for anger and resentment. The strength is in your love, find it there and let it fill your heart and soul.

Bortell's Fisheries - Ludington, MI

Off the beaten path there are some of the most amazing discoveries in life! I always like finding those places that are a little out of the way, usually the best kept secrets. Well, on a trip to the west coast of Michigan one year, I found one of those places. I would like to share it with you and hope that you will make it there someday. While visiting a lighthouse, we started chatting with a family from Iowa and they mentioned that they make the trip on the ferry from Wisconsin every year for fun and always look forward to visiting Bortell's Fisheries and they asked if we had been there yet. Not having heard of it, we were intrigues to find out more. They told us how to get there and stressed to us why we should go there. The next day, we followed the road along the shore which took us on a winding path up a hill near some high-voltage towers by the shore (I explain this detail because when you pass those towers, you know it is the correct path to Bortell's). When you arrive there, it is a very non-descript type of building. It is quite small but it is usually packed with cars and people sitting around outside eating at picnid table. When you go inside, it looks like a fish market and you select the type of fresh fish you want (when I say fresh, I mean FRESH) and then they fry it up for you and before you get to the cashier to pay, your fish is ready for you. OH, and you get A LOT of fish for a great price! The fish tastes so fresh and so amazing!! Take a drive and stop in at Bortell's, you will not be disappointed!!! Bortell's Fisheries - Ludington, MI

It is one of my favorite towns in Michigan. This sweet little cafe is welcoming in every way. I still have my souvenir cup and as I sip my coffee from it, I remember that experience and the unforgettable charm of this little cafe. Ireland Facts - Useful Information, Places To Visit, Geography

Ireland is such a dream for me! Someday, I will make it there to soak in the amazing landscapes, culture, pubs, people, music and much more. I have always had a deep love for anything Irish. Ireland seems to be in my bones. My Great-Grandmother was born in Antrim but long before I knew that, I was in love with Ireland. I have talked to people and asked if it is as beautiful as it appears and they all say that it is incredible! I have imagined myself amongst the breathtaking views, listening to the waves crash up against the surf, having a pint in a pub while listening to Irish music or just taking a drive through the countryside to appreciate the stone walls and various structures that pepper the land. It is a dream, a vision that I will hold dear until the day it becomes a reality. In the meantime, I enjoy learning more and more about the country, the towns and the people. Space is full of wonder! I am amazed at not only the infinite nature of space but in our ability to comprehend such a vast amount about space and time. When I think in terms of the universe and how vast it all is, I have a hard time wrapping my mind around it. I am grateful for the scientists and researchers that have dedicated their lives to discovery in this regard. I can only imagine what life was like before there was an understanding of the universe. What must people have thought about the sun, moon and the stars? It is all so fascinating to me. There is a wealth of knowledge available, this is a good place to start. Celtic Woman - Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace is one of those songs that seems to travel through my entire body when I listen to it, especially when accompanied by bagpipes. In part, it is the emotion and depth of the song that really strikes a chord in me. As well, this was one of my Father's favorite songs and it usually made him cry. I miss him and the way that he felt music on a very deep level. He and my Mother definitely influenced my deep love and passion for music. This is a very pleasant version of Amazing Grace but only one of many versions that I enjoy.

Mambo Caliente Arturo Sandoval

Arturo Sandoval is a man who has crossed many musical boundaries to create new sounds that really captivate his listeners. I have been taken with his music since the first time I heard it when I was very young. The Latin influence that he brought to the jazz community has been so vibrant and filled with heart. He was a protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie. If you are not familiar with the man or his musical history, check out his official website here. The song feature here, Mambo Caliente, has been a longtime favorite of mine. Enjoy and share.

Photographs: Preserving Moments in Time

Photographs are something that bring great joy and wonder to my life.  I love the art of photography for how it captures a moment in time that could otherwise be lost.  I love taking photographs as well as looking through old photos that I have collected over the years and enjoy looking at the photographs that others have taken.  It is quite an amazing art form.  Beyond that, photography has the unique ability to gift us with visions of the past, of a time before we existed.  I have been graced with a love of genealogy and through the experiences that I have had in researching my ancestry, I have been fortunate enough to know the faces of some of my ancestors.  There are many ways that photographs touch my life and the lives of others.  I want to share a few photographs that I have taken of things that bring wonder to my life.  Nature working hard to sustain life by growing toward the light and source of moisture, sunsets, weeping willow trees, nature as art, people enjoying nature, autumn colors and bridges because they take you somewhere.  I hope you enjoy these photographs and take some of your own or take the time to sit down and look through some of your old photographs, it is a rewarding experience.

Tim McGraw: Don't take the girl - music video (lyrics in description)

My taste in music is definitely eclectic. I am really drawn to lyrics, to the story that a song can illustrate more than what genre it may be from. I love songs that take me on a journey, through life, emotions, love, passion, romance, etc. Although, I have never been a dedicated country music fan, there are some country songs that really stick with me, this is one of them. Every time I hear it, I get chills running through me. It truly does affect me and I love songs that have that ability. Maybe, it does the same for you.

Fly Away Home

The movie Fly Away Home is really a very powerful story about how love can persevere and strengthen us in even the most desperate of times. I love this movie and this song by Mary Chapin Carpenter. It is a wonderful movie to share with your children. If you are feeling broken, you can nurture another and your heart will be filled until it breathes new life into your lungs. Share the wonder of it all.

The Secret of the Shadow by Debbie Ford

The Secret of the Shadow by Debbie Ford is a book that truly continues to benefit me long after reading it.  I would even say that it changed not only the way I viewed myself but my life.  It helped me to see things so differently.  I always suggest this book to friends and loved ones as I think it can benefit everyone for different reasons.  If you or someone you know is truly struggling with life, with the events of the past, with who they are, you may want to suggest this book.  It is an easy read and a fabulous tool for life.  Gain some new perspective and soak up the wonder that is in you.

The Secret of the Shadow by Debbie Ford

David Wilcox ~ Language of the Heart

David Wilcox is surely one of the best storytellers. His fluid honesty and passion is bubbling over in every one of his songs. I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform live. All of his audiences will tell you how it feels as though you are hanging out with him as he tell personal stories. Hopefully, you will have the chance to experience his music in that way one day. Share his honesty with others.

Julian Beever

I stumbled upon the amazing talent of Julian Beever many years ago and his work has never ceased to amaze and delight the senses!!!  I never saw the true potential of sidewalk chalk when I was a child!  You may have seen his work before.   Share the wonder around as it is sure to bring pure joy to many!
Julian Beever Sidewalk Artist

Jesse Cook - Cascada

Jesse Cook, a Flamenco guitarist, whose music I fell in love with right away. Having loved the music of The Gipsy Kings since I was a child, Jesse Cook was a welcome edition to my listening library. He has quite a repertoire of music and I have not heard anything of his that I did not like. I have a few favorites, like Soledad, Mario Takes a Walk, Dance of Spring and this one, Cascada.

Loreena McKennitt - The Old Ways

I have had the good fortune of being introduced to a wide variety of artists in my lifetime that span all musical genres. From time to time, I find myself so taken with an artist's musical genius that their music instantly becomes part of the fabric of my life. This was definitely the case with Loreena McKennitt. Her music moves me in a way I cannot fully describe. Her talent is incredible and the way her music seems to take flight is just without comparison for me.
Enjoy the journey . . .

Into The Mystic

Into The Mystic by Van Morrison
When I hear this song, I am totally consumed by it. It has always had this affect on me. It takes hold of me, heart and soul. Some songs just have this overwhelming affect on me. It is the sense of being swept away on a journey while calling me home at the same time. You may have heard it before, but give it a listen and share your thoughts if you like.
